Grotta Gigante
The exceptionally large size of the main underground chamber of the Grotta Gigante enabled it to enter the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest show cave in 1995. The flights of steps lead down to the main chamber, which is 98,50 metre high, 76,30 metre wide and 167,60 metre long (total volume 365.000 m3).
The Grotta Gigante is also an important underground scientific research centre ( Pendulums, Seismographic Station, Archaeological excavations, Flora and fauna research centres, Muon radiography, Radon monitoring) and surface scientific research centre. The cave houses theMarussi ultra broad band geodetic pendulums originally built for the study of earth tides and now capable of recording earthquakes.
FIELD TRIP TO GROTTA GIGANTE AND TIMAVO SPRINGS
The Mouths of the Timavo river
The Timavo River flows underground at the base of the Karst for at least 40 km of its journey to the sea. It comes to the surface near the village of San Giovanni di Duino and a few miles later it empties into the Gulf of Trieste, in the Adriatic Sea. Much of the Timavo's flow is contributed by subterranean sources, for example by rainfall infiltrated into the limestone rock (karst topography) of this region. The peculiarity of this disappearing and reappearing river has been well known since antiquity and described by historians and poets such as Livy, Strabo, and Virgil.
